Amsterdam's Anne Frank House and Museum is a deeply moving experience

anne frank house photos

Once inside the Anne Frank House, the journey through the secret annex is self-guided. Ample signage and an audio guide will offer insights into the Frank family’s daily life while in hiding. Allocate at least an hour for the tour to allow for moments of reflection as you move through the space. Shortly after the book was published, visitors were shown around by the employees who had hidden the families and could see the secret rooms. A campaign to save the building and to list it as a protected monument was started by the Dutch paper Het Vrije Volk on 23 November 1955. The building was saved by campaigners who staged a protest outside the building on the day of demolition.

He rejoined the Viennese police force, which is where Wiesenthal found him many years after the war. It shows images of young Anne Frank and the Amsterdam house at Prinsengracht 267, partially obscured by a tree, as it appeared in the 1940’s. Anne Frank poses in 1941 in this photo made available by Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is astonishing how some photos from the period have crystal clarity like this, but it does happen depending upon how well they were preserved over time. The people in the Secret Annex followed the advance of the Allied Forces on the radio. The exhibition tells the story of the Frank family in Frankfurt against the backdrop of the economic, social and political problems in Germany.

Inside the museum

As you visit the house and museum, you can see and read all about Anne’s life. I was moved to tears when I stood in the small bedroom that she shared with Fritz Pfeffer, a Jewish dentist. The pale beige wallpaper was stained, and it bore some of the pictures and posters that Anne had pinned on it during her time in The Secret Annex. Here, it is painfully clear that she was like most young girls – interested in movies, sports and fashion. And yet, she would prove to be so unlike any other adolescent. I felt that her room was a sacred space, where voice tones should be, out of respect, only a whisper.

Here you can hand in your coat, bag, umbrella, buggy or pushchair. Handbags smaller than A4 may be taken into the museum. There is no room in the cloakroom for large bags, rucksacks, suitcases or other large items.

Anne Frank’s Story on Screen: The Impact of Anne Frank Movies

A city girl through and through, Patty has always planned her adventures in and around urban areas. Through her travel writing, she aims to make a compelling case for the global city as a place of endless discovery and satisfaction. Her goal is to detail how urban exploration can fulfill the desires of anyone and everyone, from cultural and culinary adventurers to historical and supernatural enthusiasts. Before the 1959 film, only two known pieces of media focused on Anne Frank were created. The other, interestingly, was actual footage of Anne, captured by a neighbor during a wedding. Today, there have been numerous films and shows made about Anne Frank, and only around 3 are verified to have filmed within the Anne Frank House.

Preparing for Your Visit

The set of the Anne Frank video diary allowed us to show you what the rooms would have looked like when Anne and the others were in hiding there. In the next photos you will first see the original room  in the actual Anne Frank House and after that what the same space looked like on set, furnished. This is the bedroom of Hermann and Auguste van Pels, which was also used as living room and kitchen for Anne and the others. The group spent around two years living in the annex and Anne spent her time writing about her life, her mundane days, her hopes and dreams and everyday thoughts in her diary.

Accommodations like this 2-bedroom apartment in Jordaan and The Blossom House Amsterdam are good for small groups of two to four people. For a more unique stay that captures the essence of Amsterdam living, you can also opt for the Renovated B&B houseboat. These vacation rentals are highly rated not just for their proximity to the historic site but also for their guest service excellence. The ticketing system in the Anne Frank House ensures that you can build and follow an itinerary following or leading up to your visit.

Amsterdam’s Anne Frank House And Museum: A Deeply Moving Experience – And Your Heart Will Skip A Beat

The only moving images of Anne Frank of 22 July 1941 were shot here, when the girl living next door was getting married and Anne Frank leaned out of the window to see the bride and groom. It was in this house that Anne started writing in the red-chequered diary that she got for her thirteenth birthday. Here you can see the original red-checked diary Anne Frank received for her 13th birthday on 12 June 1942. A few weeks later, the Frank family had to go into hiding. She dreamt of becoming a famous writer and journalist. In 1957, the Anne Frank House organisation was established, and its main purpose was to restore the dilapidated building and open it up to the public.

There are toilets available for visitors to use at the Anne Frank House on the underground floow, as well as one accessible toilet. In the spring of 1944, Anne found out that the government planned to gather diaries that were being written once the war was over. The Pels slept in the room in which the families cooked, ate meals and listened to the radio together.

The Anne Frank Foundation was established on 3 May 1957 in cooperation with Otto Frank, Anne Frank's father, with the primary aim of collecting enough funds to purchase and restore the building. In October of that year, the company who owned it donated the building to the foundation as a goodwill gesture. The collected funds were then used to purchase the house next door, Number 265, shortly before the remaining buildings on the block were pulled down as planned.

He died in Vienna about ten years later, in 1972, aged 61. Victor Kugler was one of the people who helped hide Anne Frank and her family and friends during the German occupation of the Netherlands. In Anne Frank’s posthumously published diary, “The Diary of a Young Girl,” he was referred to under the name Mr. Kraler. The war was winding down rapidly – the Allies were already in Brussels, Belgium – but there was time for one last train to Auschwitz.

Anne’s Father Otto began new companies which dealt with the sale of canned goods in offices and warehouses alongside the Prinsengracht canal. Stepping through the secreted door into the annex, visiting Anne Frank House, the place where she penned her diary and learning about her life is an experience that you will not forget in a hurry. Unfortunately, photography is not permitted within the Anne Frank House— a policy that helps maintain the solemnity of the site while allowing guests to engage more profoundly with the stories contained within its walls.

For visitors, however, it’s more than just another historical museum; it’s a pilgrimage that honors the life and courage of a young girl whose writing illuminated the darkness of her era. The creaking floorboards, the preserved spaces, and the hushed ambiance all offer a profound experience, allowing a solemn communion with one of history’s most poignant memories. The images have been added to the online exhibition ‘Anne Frank's Former Home’, which tells the story of Anne Frank and her family before they went into hiding. My husband Bill and I just visited the Anne Frank house and museum last week. It was an incredibly moving experience and an afternoon of my life that I will never forget. Like her, I wanted to grow up and become a journalist.

Over the years, each Anne Frank movie has contributed uniquely to the public understanding of her life. They have brought Anne’s inner world to audiences of all ages, educating and evoking empathy. The emotional depth portrayed by the actresses playing Anne has consistently shed light on the human experience under persecution and the loss of innocence in the face of war.

You are able to get closer to the life of the diarist through a selection of photographs, quotes, videos and other very personal elements such as pencil lines on the wall measuring the family’s height. Visiting Anne Frank House is unlike visiting a normal museum. This is a place where visitors are drawn to reflect on the life of Anne and her family. The inhabitants of the Secret Annex lived together during a very uncertain time. Life here was cramped and not easy, the windows were blacked-out and they had to spend their days in silence, afraid of being overheard by the staff working in the offices and warehouse below.

Disney Cruise Prices 2024: What to Save Before You Sail

disney cruise 2023 price

Letting Disney choose your cabin can be a great way to get a deal on the cruise. These are known as guaranteed rates, and they are the cheapest fares in each category. All you have to do is pick your room type, such as inside, ocean view or balcony, and Disney picks which specific room number you get.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

The concierge lounge team is also not included in prepaid gratuities for concierge guests, and Disney recommends $8 per night per guest. Here, I'm sharing how much a Disney cruise costs per ship and itinerary, any extras that are worth the additional fees and how to save money on a Disney cruise. Cruises with Mickey Mouse and his pals range in price depending on many factors such as the embarkation port and destination, departure date, length of the cruise and cabin type you book. No matter which cruise you book, it will be pricey, like any Disney vacation. You'll have to determine what value you put on experiencing the "magic" of Disney. The cheapest cruises you’ll find tend to sail from San Diego, and they’re the shortest trips as well.

How do I save money on a Disney cruise?

Although Disney doesn’t always offer sales, if they are available, you'll find them on the Disney cruise line page — just click “Show special offer filters” when searching. The following bears repeating, please do NOT try calling today to book; this will just clog up the phone lines and bog down the reservation cast members. There may be people attempting to book an available cruise vacation today.

Disney Fantasy Summer 2023 Opening Day Prices

While Fall 2023 dates were announced today, general booking will not open until Thursday July 28th. The tiered booking period will begin Monday July 25th for Castaway Club Members and some others. Ultimately, it’ll be interesting to see what happens with Disney Cruise Line, just like all other aspects of travel. With that 50% future cruise credit, we’ll likely hedge our bets and book as soon as we’re eligible on May 2 (assuming we can settle on an itinerary between now and then).

Eastern Canada & Quebec

Once in Vancouver, the Disney Wonder will over a selection of 5-, 7-, and 9-night Alaskan cruises through to September 4th. The Disney Magic’s next batch of sailings will resume from San Juan on May 5, 2023 offering a 7-, and 8-night Southern Caribbean cruises. On May 20th, the Disney Magic will sail a mix of 3-, 4-, and 5-Night Bahamian, and 5-, and 7-night Western and Eastern Caribbean cruises through to September 25th. Yes, there is an itinerary gap from April 14th – May 4th which could possibly indicate a 2023 dry dock. For these reasons, you don't necessarily have to spend much on board to have a fantastic vacation. The cruise can be a good value depending on the extras you choose to add.

disney cruise 2023 price

Disney Cruise Line announced itineraries through Summer 2023 for the Magic, Wonder, Dream, Fantasy legacy ships, plus the brand-new Disney Wish! There are sailings to popular ports of call in the Greek Isles, Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Alaska, and the Caribbean. This post covers the destinations, followed by commentary on pricing, our recommended destinations, and why we’ll be booking on opening day instead of waiting for a deal. The Disney Magic will make its summer home in Miami for an assortment of exciting destinations. Starting May 27, the Disney Magic will sail four-night Bahamas cruises and five-night western Caribbean voyages, followed by two seven-night sailings in July to the eastern and western Caribbean. Select summer voyages aboard the Disney Magic will include double days – for double the fun – at Castaway Cay.

How to save money on a Disney cruise

As itineraries start to book up and stateroom inventory becomes more scarce, rates invariably increase. Pricing is demand-based, with cruises in recent years rarely decreasing in price–increases are far more common. It’s always a good idea to use an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner to do the work for you, but especially for opening day bookings. For one thing, using them to book your cruise is a great way to save time and stress. For another, their services are free to you since they’re paid commission by DCL on the reservation.

Disney Wish Fall 2023 Sailings

Please note, there appears to me a 5-night gap beginning November 6, 2023, this could be a chartered cruise such as a 2023 DVC Members Cruise from San Diego. I know we definitely will be booking one of these, as we have a 50% off future cruise credit from one of our Disney Wish itineraries that was cancelled. Which cruise we choose is subject to, ahem, internal debate, but we’re both in agreement that “going big” makes sense given the size of the savings. Leading candidates as of right now are to the Greek Isles or Northern Europe; both have many ‘new to us’ destinations that are on our travel bucket lists. Starting in late Summer 2023 and continuing through early fall, departures of the Disney Dream from Southampton will feature cruises to a wealth of destinations including Spain, France, the British Isles, Norway and Iceland.

Both cards will allow you to redeem your points toward purchases at a rate of 1 cent per point. You’ll be able to find these deals via that special offers filter shown above. For example, that three-night San Diego sailing mentioned above dropped from $1,326 to $1,164 once we selected the U.S. military filter. Instead, enjoy the plethora of complimentary activities, such as pools, movies, shows, karaoke, dancing and more. And when it comes to food and beverage, simply sip the included soda and coffee, eat the (already amazing) free food and don’t forget to order a Mickey ice cream bar with your complimentary room service. The special offers filter will let you know what types of discounts are available, like the example above promoting up to 35% off on select sailings.

You can flag activities your kids want to attend, so you can get to the kids clubs before they start. At this time, Fall 2023 dates are not available for the Disney Wonder. Many of these destinations are oriented toward North American travelers, but you’ll find options scattered all over the world. The Disney Dream has new destinations on the horizon for the fall of 2023. Please note, the port order may be different and will be adjusted once the full detailed itineraries are available to view on Disney Cruise Line’s website.

Despite its wide variety of destinations, Disney operates only six ships. Its newest ship, the Disney Treasure, is set to launch in December 2024. This may influence which products we review and write about (and where those products appear on the site), but it in no way affects our recommendations or advice, which are grounded in thousands of hours of research. Our partners cannot pay us to guarantee favorable reviews of their products or services.

Cruises Without a Passport: Here's Everywhere You Can Cruise Without a Passport in 2024

cruise without passport

Normally, these cruises depart from the East Coast of the United States, primarily from Florida homeports. If you are looking for a shorter duration cruise or just a quick getaway, then a Bahamas cruise is definitely for you. These documents will permit you to receive a temporary passport to be used for reentry into the United States. Temporary passports are only valid for a short period of time and are given out to travelers who need to travel quickly but don't have time to wait for a standard passport. Embassy or consulate abroad, it typically takes only a few days for temporary passports to process and receive. If you are a U.S. citizen and your cruise embarks or disembarks in a foreign country, including Canada, you will always need your passport for the cruise (in some cases a passport card will suffice).

Can you take a cruise out of the country without a passport?

If you're interested in cruising to Alaska without a passport, look for itineraries that begin (and end) in Seattle, San Francisco or southern California ports, such as Los Angeles or Long Beach, California. The most common length for these closed-loop Alaska cruises operated by the major cruise lines is seven nights. Cruises early or late in the season might be only four or five nights, and trips departing from LA are usually 14 nights. If you’re not familiar with a passport card, it’s a government-issued I.D. A passport card is different than a passport book, the multi-page booklets that customs officials stamp as you enter a country. Many cruises design itineraries encompassing islands like Grand Cayman, where you can mingle with stingrays, or St. Maarten, with its split Dutch and French personality.

You’re our first priority.Every time.

If your cruise itinerary does require a passport, and you don’t have one, you will be turned away from the ship and not allowed to board. Note that the government-issued photo ID must show your photo, name, and date of birth. A driver’s license is valid; however, a social security card is not.

Why You Should Travel with a Passport Anyway

Get a view of Kaua‘i’s stunning landscapes from the vantage point of the sea on any number of Hawai‘i cruises. From urban destinations like Boston and Halifax to picturesque destinations like Bar Harbor, Maine, and Saint John, New Brunswick, cruises like these trade palm trees and sunscreen for evergreens and rain jackets. This itinerary on Celebrity's Celebrity Summit ship doesn't require a passport because of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. Cruises to Bermuda are almost always closed-loop sailings from a U.S. port, save for a few transatlantic trips.

What Cruise Lines Don’t Require A Passport

Otherwise, on closed-loop itineraries that travel to Canada, you only need to present a government ID and birth certificate (or a passport card). Cruising without a passport can be a great way to explore the world without having to worry about visas or other restrictions. However, there are some cons to consider before you make the decision to cruise without a passport. First, some ports of call may not accept passports as valid identification. Second, if you get into trouble while cruising, your passport may not be enough to get you out of trouble. Cruising is back after a few years of rough seas, figuratively speaking.

Learn About Credit Cards

Despite the allure of no-passport-required adventures, we’d be remiss not to highlight the security and peace of mind a passport provides. Imagine needing to fly home unexpectedly from a foreign port because of an emergency, or getting the chance for an impromptu jaunt to a fascinating nearby country. Imagine stepping off your cruise ship and straight onto the soft sands of the Bahamas.

cruise without passport

Specific ports of call will require a passport to disembark, so you’ll have to stay onboard if you don’t have yours. Of course, with near-endless entertainment available, this won’t be too much of a drag. But it is something to consider if you want to explore all the destinations along your cruise route. Additionally, if you miss your scheduled departure, you can fly to a foreign port to catch the remainder of your cruise or disembark and fly back to the US in an emergency. Many of the major cruise lines usually have ships that visit Bermuda.

Alaska-Canada

Of course, if you are traveling internationally, U.S. citizens will need a passport. A passport is required for all international flights and for any cruise that embarks or disembarks in a foreign country. The answer to all of these questions for U.S. citizens is no -- as long as you’re taking a closed-loop cruise.

Otherwise, as you can see from the list above, most popular Caribbean destinations are fair game. Just ensure that you have the requisite documents in place of your passport, including a government-issued photo ID and an original or copy of your birth certificate. Explore beautiful spots spread across Maui, Kauai and the Big Island, and drink in the natural beauty only Hawaii delivers. On this exciting trip, you can deep sea fish for marlin, explore forest caves and waterfalls, soak up the sun on a black-sand beach and attend a traditional luau. U.S. departure ports for enjoyable Hawaiian cruises include San Francisco, San Diego, Long Beach and Honolulu.

Check with your cruise line to ensure you have the appropriate documents. Closed-loop Hawaii cruises that don't require passports come in two varieties. The short option is to fly to Honolulu and take a seven- or 10-night cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America. This is the only large cruise ship allowed to operate entirely within the Hawaiian Islands without visiting a foreign port. Part of America but still exotic enough for an ideal getaway, Hawaii offers black-sand beaches, volcanic vistas, surfing opportunities, amazing food and, of course, hula dancing.

Tour history in St. George or get out of the city to dive into Bermuda’s true treasures. Pink sand beaches dot the coast, caves hide enchanting pools and stalactite ceilings, and verdant hills offer stunning views of the tiny island. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful or enchanting domestic cruise than one sailing around the dramatic islands of Hawaii.

This means that you don’t need a passport to board or disembark the ship. Closed-loop cruises are available to all U.S. citizens, regardless of age. First, it’s more affordable than taking a cruise to an international destination.

You likely won’t get your money back either, and if you traveled domestically to the cruise homeport, you’ll need to make your own arrangements to book a hotel or change your flights back home. Yes, if an adult needs a passport to cruise then a child will also need a passport. If possible, I'd recommend close to six months prior to your vacation. However, it is preferable to have a passport with you (in the event you need medical care and have to stay in the country, for example).

The necessity of a visa depends on the cruise itinerary and your nationality. While your cruise must start and end in the U.S., some Alaskan cruises make pit stops in dreamy British Columbian spots like Victoria, renowned for its lush Butchart Gardens. However, it’s essential to carry specific documents, like your birth certificate and government ID, for these little side adventures.

Finally, Curaçao rounds out the ABC Islands with plenty to satisfy even the most daring outdoor adventurers. There’s an ancient crater carved by waves and currents that forms a natural blowhole. And then there are the Hato Caves, a network of subterranean chambers you can access easily and one of the island’s top natural wonders. Your cruise out of Barbados will take you to Willemstad, Curaçao’s capital, which overflows with European charm. Bayside Marketplace, across from the port, is a popular waterfront shopping spot for visitors. Lincoln Road Mall spans 10 blocks of shops— and Miracle Mile is a long string of specialty stores.

How much does a cruise cost? 2024

average cruise prices

Wine by the bottle (which you can take to your cabin or finish at subsequent meals) starts around $25 and climbs steeply from there. The price of a cruise does not generally include airfare, ground transportation, or shore excursions. You will also need to budget for incidentals like tipping, souvenirs, and laundry. Some cruise lines offer all-inclusive packages that include these extras, but they tend to be more expensive. Cruise prices can vary so much in terms of what is an add-on and what is included.

More Royal Caribbean

Many travelers fly to the departure city, which can increase the cost of your trip. Cruise pricing will always be impacted by individual demand and supply. As you can see, there are sailings that have significant price increases fairly early. Such sailings are typically in high demand seasons (such as public holidays). And there is also a very active last minute season with strong pricing drops about 90 to 25 days before departure (red line).

Getting to the Ship

Booking a shore excursion through Royal Caribbean provides more security, as the ship will wait for you if the tour runs late. Booking through an independent company–while often cheaper–does not offer this sense of security. Dining package costs are typically around $84.99 for a 2-night (Chops + 1) package, $115 for a 3-night package, and $225 for an Unlimited Dining Package.

These days, most of the gratuities you’ll be expected to pay will automatically be added to all onboard purchases. The standard cruise gratuity is 15%, though this is adjustable in your onboard account. It’s important to note that you do not have to pay these gratuities, but if you enjoyed the service from your stateroom and dining staff, you should pay them. The amount varies depending on your specific route as different ports charge different fees. In our experience, for most cruises expect to spend between $100 and $200 per person on these fees and taxes. On my Celebrity cruise, I booked a cabin category that included breakfast and dinner in an exclusive specialty restaurant, so I did not pay for any food upcharges onboard.

And people who can sail during the spring or fall will save hundreds versus sailing in the summer. Shore excursions are an extra charge on most cruises, though upscale, luxury and most river cruises include a selection of both complimentary excursions and extra-fee excursions. Pricing varies widely based on type of tour, duration and age of participant. You can book through the cruise line or arrange your own tour or excursion independently.

Many cruise lines offer drink packages both in advance and on board. Whether you’re on a family vacation or a booze cruise, these packages can occasionally help to soften the sticker shock of drink prices. Be sure to read the fine print, though, as not every drink package is the deal it may seem. With the exception of many luxury cruises and, somewhat oddly, Norwegian Sky, prepare to pay for all alcoholic drinks and specialty coffees while on the ship. Many cruise lines also charge for sodas and bottled water, at least outside of meal times.

Some of the ships in their collection can be a bit outdated but prices often reflect this and you can still expect a high level of onboard entertainment, meals, and service. You’ll also see thousands of people on some of these mega-ships so while service should still be up there, don’t expect anything too personal. These two cruise lines along with a handful of others, are considered your wallet-friendly option with the basics included and the chance to upgrade and purchase a la carte as you choose. If you’re looking to save money on a Disney cruise, consider waiting for a sale, checking relevant discounts or redeeming points to help keep your out-of-pocket costs low. And if you like to enjoy an alcoholic beverage every once in a while, we recommend bringing your preferred drink with you on board.

What affects the cost of an Alaskan cruise?

average cruise prices

Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Group saw an average around $85 per person, per day in the last year. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. saw closer to $120 per person each day. But we have some estimates below to give you an idea of the cost of taking a cruise. But just like on land, but there are bigger changes that could impact the cost of a cruise going forward. Before we get too far, however, you should know that just like buying a car, you can spend as much — or as little — as you want for your vacation. During my Mexican Riviera cruise, I took advantage of a status offer on Celebrity and had them launder a full bag at no charge.

The bottom line, though, is that in most cases, your total cruise vacation will cost considerably more than the cruise fare alone. The thing that jumps out at me is that the total cost is almost twice the cruise fare. I ran the numbers on several other cruises by shopping online and found that to be true in most cases. Also watch out for destinations where the ship docks some distance from the city you are expecting to see.

Of course, the type of cabin that you sail on Carnival will have a big impact on what you pay. Interior cabins — which sit on the inside of the ship and have no windows — are the least expensive rooms that you will find. From there, the prices rise for oceanview, balcony rooms, and suites. So you can pay thousands more for the exact same cruise if you sail in the nicest rooms compared to the least expensive.

Tips are not mandatory, but they are customary and typically range from $10 to $12 per person daily. This fee is automatically added to your onboard expense account and can be paid upfront when you initially book your cruise. The average cost of a shore excursion is around $100 per person. However, this price can vary depending on the type of excursion and the port of call. For example, a snorkeling tour in the Caribbean might cost more than a city tour in Europe. Unfortunately, cruises are often priced and sold based on double occupancy.

Before booking, find out what considerations you should make to determine the cost of a Caribbean cruise. Ocean view cabins are the next step up from an interior cabin and feature a porthole window. Prices for ocean view cabins are generally priced at around $110 to $197 per person, per night. Cruise pricing is influenced by a number of factors, and knowing the trends of what makes one cruise more expensive than another can help you in the booking process. There are a host of extras you can add onto the cost of your cruise, and they're all discretionary based on your needs and preferences. Ever since the cruise industry restarted in 2022, demand has skyrocketed.
